The Canadian Mortgage & Housing Corporation (CMHC) suggests the following home maintenance schedule in it’s handy “About Your House” publication series:

• Have furnace or heating system serviced by a qualified service company every two years for a gas furnace, and every year for an oil furnace, or as recommended by the manufacturer.
• If you have central air conditioning, make sure the drain pan under the cooling coil mounted in the furnace plenum is draining properly and is clean.
• Lubricate circulating pump on hot water heating system.
• Bleed air from hot water radiators.
• Disconnect the power to the furnace and examine the forced-air furnace fan belt, if installed, for wear, looseness or noise; clean fan blades of any dirt buildup.
• Check chimneys for obstructions such as nests.
• Vacuum electric baseboard heaters to remove dust.
• Remove the grille

Another update from Alison Harding on life along the beautiful Sunshine Coast of British Columbia. 

Halloween, Garlic, Salmon and Fall Colours. 

So, the next big day is Halloween! In our rural neighbourhood we only have three or four families who come to the door, but our grandchildren often go into Powell River to “trick-or-treat” with their dad or with friends. At fourteen, our grand-daughter is really too old to go door to door, but can’t resist the lure of lots of free candy! Of course, her idea of a costume is to dress up like Avril Lavigne, complete with a pink streak in her hair which she hoped that I would pay for at a professional salon. She will have to make do with spray on (and wash off!) from Walmart.  

It is also a time for planting garlic, which I did yesterday as I could not resist the lovely weather. I tripped over the edge of the raised bed whilst dumping a bag of compost into the soil, and managed to fall headlong into the kale patch! We are having kale for supper tonight.

A quick look at www.BCjobs.com shows that despite the world wide economic woes there is still work to be found around the province. How about this one?

As the annual “Turkey Sale” of discounted ski and snowboard gear takes place in Whistler from October 8-11 and the official closing of the Whistler Mountain bike park rolls around on October 11^th it can only mean one thing: Ski season is on the way! In fact, it’s scheduled to open on November 25^th and rumor has it that we’re in for a great year. After unseasonably warm weather during the Winter Olympics last February it seems only fair that mother nature should reward BC locals with a dump of light powder and blue bird skies over the coming months.
